New Phase

Quinn's hit a couple of new phases recently: tantrums and nervousness. The tantrums are expected (terrible twos) and fairly easily managed so far. Her infrequent yelling and screaming has a definite tinge of "trying this out to see if it works" so it's not difficult to ignore into extinction. The sudden case of nerves is more disconcerting. She's begun to startle at noises that were no problem previously. For example, several houses on our street are undergoing renovation, so construction noise is constant. So much so that when her storybooks ask "What do YOU hear on your street?", Quinn mimics the sound of a circular saw. However, this week she heard a saw start up and jumped into my arms to hide until it stopped. Similar meltdowns occurred at Science World when the auto hand dryers went on in the washroom and when I accidentally knocked over the coffee grounds in the kitchen.

I think this isn't something to be overly concerned with yet. She could be just entering a new stage of awareness about the world around her, which is a step forward. But it's tough seeing our cheery little girl quaking with fear over innocuous things. Things to work on...
